REANIMAL fans finally have a reason to boot the game back up: the first DLC pack, “The Prisoner,” just dropped, and it’s live everywhere the base game is.

What happened

Tarsier Studios has released “The Prisoner,” the debut expansion for REANIMAL, on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC. The pack adds new playable content built around the Soldier and the Prisoner, sending players into fresh areas packed with new horrors to survive. No staggered rollout, no platform exclusivity window — it’s out simultaneously across the board, which is always a nice change of pace for a co-op horror release.

Why it matters

REANIMAL made its name on tense, atmosphere-heavy co-op scares, and the biggest question for any horror game post-launch is always whether the studio can keep that tension fresh without just recycling the same scares in a new coat of paint. Giving players control of the Soldier and the Prisoner specifically suggests Tarsier is leaning into new character perspectives rather than just reskinning the existing cast, which is the smarter way to extend a horror game’s shelf life. New areas also matter more here than in most genres — once you’ve learned a horror game’s layout, half the fear evaporates, so fresh environments are basically a fear reset button.

What to expect

Expect the DLC to lean hard into REANIMAL’s established formula: claustrophobic spaces, unsettling creature design, and co-op sequences where communication with your partner is the difference between escaping and becoming a snack. Playing as the Prisoner in particular hints at a section built around vulnerability or restriction — think limited tools or mobility compared to other characters — which tends to crank up tension in horror co-op designs. Since it’s available day one across PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC, there’s no need to wait on a delayed console port either; grab a co-op partner and it’s ready to go.

First DLC packs are always a bit of a litmus test for how committed a studio is to a game’s post-launch life, and shipping across every platform at once is a solid sign Tarsier isn’t treating this as an afterthought. If “The Prisoner” nails the new-areas-new-fears formula, it’s a good early signal for what future REANIMAL content could look like.
